Moving tips: Packing moving boxes properly

Moving, relocating – Save yourself a lot of stress by packing properly. Pack for a stress-free move with these tips and checklists.

    Moving: Where do I begin?

You probably know the most common question when moving: “Where did all this stuff I have to pack come from?” What used to be hidden in shelves and cupboards now needs a place in the moving box. This can add up to quite a few boxes – often more than you thought. But what’s the best way to start?

Packing smart is half the move

It makes sense to ask yourself the following questions early on:

    • Is there anything else I can get rid of before moving?

    • How many boxes do I need?

    • What accessories do I need to pack properly for my move?

    • What is the best way to pack moving boxes?

We’ve put together three quick tips and in-depth packing checklists for your move.

Three quick tips: Pack moving boxes properly

How many moving boxes do you need?

Rule of thumb: For a shared room 10 to 15 moving boxes. For a one-person household (1 to 2 room apartment) 30 boxes. For a family, 20 to 25 boxes per person.

What accessories do you need for the move?

In addition to moving boxes, the following are helpful: Mattress covers, clothes boxes, bottle packaging, cushioning material, bags for screws, archive boxes for important papers, strong adhesive tape, pen for writing.

When do you pack for the move?

Start a month before your moving date with rooms that you don’t use often (e.g. guest rooms). First pack things that you don’t urgently need (decoration, certain clothes, games, books).

    Prepare for your move

    Sell used stuff

    Clear out before moving out

You don’t have to pack what you no longer need anyway. You can sell a lot online or at the flea market. It is best to hand in bulky waste to regional disposal centers or you can order a “container” for disposal. Also, check if you still need to get rid of old paints or expired medicines.

    Moving stress-free

Pack in good time before moving

Packing moving boxes takes time. Start early, about a month before your moving date. Plan weekends to pack and a few hours in the evenings to avoid time pressure. As your move approaches, take a few days off if possible. Then you can pack the final things, such as technology and crockery, in peace and carefully.

    Play it safe

    Avoid used boxes

You can find used moving boxes cheap on the internet, but unfortunately they are often damaged. Torn handle holes and unstable bottoms make moving no fun. It’s better to invest in new, suitable moving boxes. Renting expensive boxes is also not worth it. Because you can use your own boxes for storing things in the basement.

    Recommendation: Packing for your move

    Durable

    Use sturdy boxes

You can use high-quality moving boxes later for storage.

    Shatterproof

    Use padding material

Glasses or other sensitive objects should be well padded.

    Special boxes

    Pack bottles properly

Are you moving with expensive wine bottles? We have the right packaging for you.

Packing for the move: practical tips and checklists

Everything at hand, packed in a back-friendly way, and moved stress-free. Of course, moving is never that easy. These checklists ensure you’re well prepared for your move.

Checklist: What you need for a move

    • 10 moving boxes per room: It’s better to plan generously so you don’t have to pack the boxes too heavily.
    • Clothes boxes for winter and ski clothes: You can store the boxes directly in the basement and your clothes are protected from dust.

    • Bottle packaging for wine: Bottles can be transported safely in packaging with compartments.

    • Bubble wrap or tissue paper for glass and dishes: Better than newspaper because the printer’s ink can rub off on sensitive surfaces.

    • Edge protection for mirrors and frames: Put the protection over the corners.

    • Covers for mattresses and pillows: You can transport textiles in practical mattress covers.

    • Bag for screws: When you dismantle furniture, collect screws and other small parts in labeled bags.

    • Archive boxes for tax documents: You can transport important papers and documents in suitable boxes and store them directly in the basement.

    • Book boxes: Particularly stable and slightly smaller than normal moving boxes. To prevent your books from sliding around and buckling, place them back to back in the box.

    • Scale: If you want to make sure your boxes aren’t too heavy, have a bathroom scale handy.

    • Clearly visible pen: Labeling boxes is the be-all and end-all when moving.

    Checklist: Packing moving boxes properly

    • Logical: Everyone has their own packing system, for example by room or by closet. Keep your system up and running so you don’t get confused when unpacking.
    • Labeled and tagged: Label your moving boxes from several sides so you always have an overview. You can also mark boxes for your helpers or the moving company: For example with numbers or colors for each room.
    • Don’t overloaded: Pack a maximum of 15 to 20 kilos per moving box. Take extra care when packing books, these boxes can quickly become too heavy.
    • Heavy on the bottom: It’s best to pack folders and books on the bottom so sensitive items don’t get crushed.
    • Fill empty spaces: If you’re packing delicate things, fill the spaces in the moving box with bubble wrap, tissue paper or towels.
    • Pack valuables separately: If it’s close to your heart, fragile or valuable, pack it separately and transport it to your new home yourself.
    • Secure plants: You can also pack small plants in boxes. Secure the pots with crumpled newspaper.
    • Pack kids’ box: Moving with children is a special challenge. So that you have everything you need ready, pack an extra kids’ box with your favorite stuffed animals or toys, diapers, wet wipes, changing mats, baby food and picture books.
