A boxtar is a homemade instrument staple. Easy and fun to make, loud enough to satisfy any preschool musician and quiet enough for the rest of the family to endure any excessive shredding. Traditionally made from a cereal box, quite frankly any good box will do, and the bigger the box… The bigger the sound!
Step 1
Tools and Ingredients
Get a good box — flatter boxes will be more functional, a long cardboard tube from a kitchen roll, some long rubber bands, several flat headed pins, a box cutter, a glue-gun or just duck tape. Additional small piece of thick cardboard, a tongue depressor or a pencil will come in handy for making the bridge.
Step 2
Make the sound hole
Glue or tape the box firmly shut. Find the center of what you want to be in the front and make the sound hole there. Use a cup or a small plate to mark the outline and cut it out with a box cutter.
Step 3
Make the neck hole
Outline the diameter of the tube on the side of the box and cut it out whith a box cutter. The neck in this design is only decorative, we will not be mounting the strings on it. It’s best to place it in the center of the side of the box.
Step 4
Mount the neck
Insert the tube into the side hole and fasten with glue or duck-tape.
Step 5
Make a bridge
Raising the strings above the surface of the box will improve their sound, so make a little bridge. In keeping with the cardboard theme of This Is a Good Box we recommend a piece of thick cardboard, but a tongue depressor, popsicle stick, or even a short wooden pencil will do just as well. Fasten it half way between the sound hole and the edge opposite from the neck. Fasten with pins or hot glue.
Step 6
Fasten the strings
Cut the rubber bands and tie them around pins placed evenly on two sides of the box. You can use hot glue at both ends to make sure they stay in place.
Step 7
Decorate
Functionally your guitar is done, you can now decorate it as you like!
