Closing packages: Your guide to the right adhesive tape

Which type of tape is suitable for which box? Where do the price differences between adhesive tapes come from? These tips will help you find the right packing tape and save money when sealing packages.

    It’s all about stickiness

Hos is adhesive tape sticky but can still be unrolled? The secret is pressure-sensitive adhesives: They are permanently sticky and can adhere to different materials.

But pressure-sensitive adhesives only retain their permanent tack at room temperature. They don’t like cold and heat very much, become brittle or even tear. It is best to store adhesive tapes at room temperature, protected from light and dry. Adhesive tapes have different carrier surfaces, such as paper, foil or fabric, which are coated with pressure-sensitive adhesives.

If you often have to seal packages, for example for online retail, you already know this: There are a few things to consider when choosing the right packaging tape and when sealing packaging. We have answers to the most important questions so you can keep track of it all.

    • How do you save money on sealing packages?

    • What different types of adhesive tape are there?

    • Why are there price differences for adhesive tapes that look the same?

Quick tips: Do’s & Dont’s when closing packages

    Save money when closing packages

Use wide tape instead of narrow tape. It’s quicker and cheaper in the long run because you need less material.

    Poorly closed

Sealing a package multiple times is not any more secure and doesn’t leave a good impression on customers.

    The right technique

With the right adhesive technology, you can close packages quickly, securely and neatly.

Closing packages: The differences in adhesive tape

    Acrylate, hot melt, rubber

    The adhesive used

Adhesive tapes made of polypropylene (PP) are chemically manufactured with acrylate adhesive or hotmelt adhesive (artificial rubber). They have good immediate adhesion at the beginning, but not a high level of durability. This means they can detach from the box after 2 to 3 days. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) adhesive tape is often combined with natural rubber. At the beginning it does not have high adhesion, but after 1 to 2 days it binds strongly to the substrate and can no longer be easily detached (high cohesion).

    Advantages and disadvantages

    Adhesive tapes compared

PP adhesive tapes are tear-resistant and cheap, but very loud when unrolling. That’s why there are low-noise adhesive tapes. These have been chemically treated so they don’t make any noise when unrolling. PP adhesive tapes are best used for sealing light and medium-weight packages. PVC adhesive tapes are ideal for your heavy boxes: They are durable and extremely tear-resistant, but you need a little more force to unroll them.

    CHF 1 to 5

    The cost of adhesive tapes

At first glance, it isn’t easy to recognize the differences in packaging tapes and to understand the sometimes large price differences. The prices depend on the material used: For example, you can get thin, rather inferior PP adhesive tapes with little adhesive for just under CHF 1. PVC tapes with a thicker layer of natural rubber cost CHF 4 to 5. We recommend TESA as a particularly high-quality adhesive tape brand.

Close packages properly with adhesive tape

    Up to 12 kg

    2-stripe closure

The lid-bottom closure is suitable for low transport loads. Cover each side of your package with a long piece of tape.

    Over 12kg

    Double L closure

The 6-strip closure is ideal for heavy boxes and long transport routes. Apply the tape as a “double L” over the four short edges of your packaging.

    From 25 kg

    Double T closure

Suitable for a very high transport load. Seal the bottom and lid slits by covering the edges with tape.

    Convenient & fast

    Box with self-adhesive closure

You’ve never been able to close boxes this quickly: The Model Online Shop offers practical boxes with self-adhesive closures in various sizes. This solution is particularly efficient for e-commerce.

    Adhesive tape made easy

Of course, you need different adhesive tape for large, heavy packages than for small, light ones. But which one exactly? This overview tells you the ideal adhesive tape for your needs.

    PP tape

Adhesive tape made of polypropylene is tear-resistant and well suited for sealing light and medium-weight packages. As a low-noise version, it is also wonderfully quiet when unrolling. PP tape has a high level of instant tack, but not good permanent tack, which means it will come off after a while.

    PVC tape

Polyvinyl chloride adhesive tape is very durable and tear-resistant. Ideal for heavy boxes and for storing sealed packages. The adhesive strength develops after 1 to 2 days and lasts for years thanks to the natural rubber adhesive.

    Paper tape

Adhesive tape made of paper is tear-resistant and can be unrolled quietly. The base made of recyclable kraft paper means it is also environmentally friendly. This tape is suitable for light to medium-weight packages.

    Filament tape

This adhesive tape is fiberglass reinforced and therefore very tear-resistant. It has a high level of immediate and permanent tack and must be used when shipping dangerous goods.

    Masking tape

You have probably used this tape before to mask off things when painting. It is easy to unroll, write on, tear off by hand and remove without leaving any residue.

    Wet tape

You can only use this band together with a corresponding device: It is moistened by the machine and then applied. The adhesive tape is recyclable, insensitive and also holds on dusty surfaces.

    Fabric tape

If you need a particularly heavy-duty adhesive tape, choose a tape reinforced with textile fabric or tear-resistant plastics. You can also use fabric tape to seal or insulate.
