Moving tips: Pack your moving box correctly

Moving - packing properly saves you a lot of stress. These tips and checklists will help you pack for your move in a relaxed manner.

    Relocation: Where do I start?

You probably know the most common question when moving house: "Where do all the things that I now have to pack in boxes actually come from?" What was previously hidden away on shelves and in cupboards now needs a place in a moving box. This can add up to quite a few boxes - often more than you expected. But what's the best way to start?

    Wisely packed is half moved

It makes sense to ask yourself the following questions early on:

    • Can I clear out a bit before the move?
    • How many moving boxes do I need?
    • What other accessories do I need to pack properly for my move?
    • What is the best way to pack moving boxes?

We have put together three quick tips and detailed packing checklists for your move.

Three quick tips: Packing moving boxes correctly

How many moving boxes do you need?

Rule of thumb: 10 to 15 moving boxes for a room in a shared flat. For a one-person household (1- to 2-room flat) 30 boxes. For a family, 20 to 25 boxes per person.

    Which accessories for the move?

In addition to moving boxes, the following are helpful: mattress covers, clothes boxes, bottle packaging, cushioning material, small bags for screws, archive boxes for important papers, strong adhesive tape, pen for labelling.

When do you pack for the move?

Start a month before your moving date with rooms that you don't use much (e.g. guest room). Start by packing things that you don't really need (decorations, certain clothes, games, books).

    Prepare your move

    Goodbye used goods

    Muck out before the move

You don't have to pack up what you no longer need anyway. Many things can be resold online or at a flea market. Bulky waste is best handed in at regional waste disposal centres or you can order a "skip" for disposal. Also check whether you still need to get rid of old paint or expired medication.

    Stress-free moving

Pack in good time before the move

Packing moving boxes takes time. Start early, about a month before your moving date. Plan weekends for packing and a few hours in the evenings to avoid time pressure. As your move approaches, take a few days holiday if possible. Then you can pack the last things, such as equipment and crockery, calmly and carefully.

    Play it safe

    Avoid used cardboard boxes

You can buy used moving boxes cheaply on the internet, but unfortunately they are often damaged. Torn handle holes and unstable bottoms are no fun when moving. It's better to invest in new, suitable moving boxes. It is also not worth renting expensive boxes. You can use your own boxes for storage in the cellar.

    Recommendation: Packaging for your move

    Durable

    Use sturdy cardboard boxes

You can use high-quality moving boxes for storage later.

    Break-proof

    Use upholstery material

Glasses or other sensitive objects should be well padded.

    Special cardboard boxes

    Pack bottles correctly

Are you moving expensive bottles of wine? We have the packaging for you.

Packing for the move: practical tips and checklists

Everything to hand, back-friendly packing, stress-free moving. Of course, moving is never that easy. But with these checklists, you'll be well prepared for your move.

Checklist: What you need for a move

    • 10 moving boxes per room: It's better to plan generously so that you don't have to pack the boxes too heavily.
    • Clothes boxes for winter and ski clothing: You can store the boxes directly in the cellar and your clothes are protected from dust.
    • Bottle packaging for wine: transport bottles safely in packaging with compartments.
    • Bubble wrap or tissue paper for glass and crockery: Better than newspaper, as the printing ink can stain sensitive surfaces.
    • Edge protection for mirrors and frames: Put the protection over the corners.
    • Covers for mattresses and pillows: You can transport textiles in practical mattress covers.
    • Bags for screws: When dismantling furniture, collect screws and other small parts in labelled bags.
    • Archive boxes for tax documents: You can transport important papers and documents in suitable boxes and store them directly in the cellar.
    • Book boxes: Particularly sturdy and slightly smaller than normal moving boxes. To prevent your books from sliding into each other and the pages from creasing, place them back to back in the box.
    • Scales: If you want to make sure that your boxes are not too heavy, have a bathroom scale ready.
    • Clearly visible pen: Labelling boxes is the be-all and end-all when moving.

Checklist: Pack your moving box correctly

    • Logical: Everyone has their own packing system, for example by room or by wardrobe. Stick to your system so you don't get mixed up when unpacking.
    • Labelled and marked: Label your moving box from several sides so you always have an overview. You can also mark boxes for your helpers or the removal company: For example, with numbers or colours for each room.
    • Do not overload: Pack a maximum of 15 to 20 kilos per box. Be particularly careful when packing books, as these boxes can quickly become too heavy.
    • Put heavy items at the bottom: It is best to pack files and books at the bottom so that fragile items are not crushed.
    • Fill cavities: If you are packing delicate items, fill any voids in the moving box with bubble wrap, tissue paper or towels.
    • Pack valuable items separately: Anything that is close to your heart, fragile or valuable is best packed separately and transported to your new home yourself.
    • Secure plants: You can also pack small plants in cardboard boxes. Simply secure the pots with crumpled newspaper.
    • Packing children's boxes: Moving with children is a particular challenge. Pack an extra children's box with their favourite stuffed animals or toys, nappies, wet wipes, changing mat, baby food and picture books so that you have everything you need to hand.
