    Guide: The optimal food packaging

All about the requirements for food packaging, how to package food safely - and why packaging made from environmentally friendly paper & cardboard is a good choice.

    Food packaging

Sending frozen meat in summer at 32 degrees? No problem with the optimum packaging for food. We have put our refrigerated packaging through its paces using sophisticated heat sensors: They maintain the desired temperature for up to 36 hours. Even in hot summers. Find out how this works on this page.

However, reliable insulation is only one requirement for food packaging. Food packaging is regulated by law and must be well thought out: Because it has to protect food and keep it fresh, provide consumers with the right information and at the same time be practical and environmentally friendly.

    Food packaging: three examples

    For bottles

High-quality cardboard bottle packaging is ideal for shipping with haulage companies. Bottles can be shipped in them unbreakable, horizontally or vertically.

    For liquids

Bag-in-box is the tried and tested packaging for liquid foods. Whether milk, cream, salad dressing or cooking oil - the dream team of bag and box forms an oxygen barrier to keep liquids fresh for longer. Drinks and other liquids are extremely easy to fill and dispense. No spillages, no wasted product.

    Food packaging: three packaging stages

    Primary packaging

The primary packaging is in direct contact with the product. For example: individually wrapped chocolate wafers.

    Secondary packaging

The secondary packaging usually has a high paper content or is made entirely of corrugated cardboard. It can be removed without touching the actual product - the chocolate wafer.

    Tertiary packaging

Tertiary packaging is used as a transport and storage aid. For example, when the bags of chocolate wafers are loaded onto a pallet, wrapped with strapping and dispatched with optimum protection.

    Packaging food: how it works

Cool, keep warm, protect from moisture

Thermal insulation is the magic word for food packaging. Cold or frozen food should stay cool, warm food should stay warm - and everything should be as fresh as possible. Did you know that paper has a very high insulation value? It is even used to insulate buildings. Together with its partner, flax fleece, paper is ideal for thermal packaging. This is because flax fleece can absorb moisture in packaging without being damaged.

    Secure closure

To ensure that nothing leaks, the insulation remains intact and the packaging remains hygienic, packaging for food items requires a particularly secure closure. You can also work with environmentally friendly adhesive tape.

    Simply open & close

Food packaging scores highly when it is easy to open and close again. In the catering industry and at home, nobody wants to fiddle with closures for a long time or repack products because the original carton was damaged during opening.

    Labelling packaged food

What must be labelled on secondary packaging? Pre-packaged food should be labelled in at least one official language. Mandatory information must be labelled clearly, legibly and permanently in a clearly visible place.  There are also the Foodstuffs and Utility Articles Ordinance and product-specific regulations.

    The right size

Deceptive packaging? Food packaging should not give this impression. What's more, oversized packaging wastes raw materials and storage space. Customised food packaging is better received by customers and the environment and is easier on your budget. Talk to us about your requirements for customised food packaging.
